Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra)
Elderberry is a cooling and drying herb that has been used traditionally for thousands of years as an immune tonic. Invitro studies have shown elderberry to have direct antiviral activities by binding to and blocking H1N1 influenza viruses from infected cells. In human clinical trials the use of elderberry enhances the immune response by increasing the levels of both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines effectively shortening the duration of influenza infections 2 to 4 days when taken at the earliest stages of infection.
Black Elderberry is native to most of Europe (except for the northernmost regions), southwest Asia, and northern Africa. It has been introduced throughout parts of North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific islands. Another variety of S. Nigra is native to most of eastern North America along with some varieties growing throughout the western United States and down into Mexico.
Japanese Honeysuckle, Jīn Yín Huā: Lonicera japonica
Honeysuckle has been used in ancient medicine for many of its beneficial properties. Most commonly it has been recognized for its anti-viral, anti-oxidant, ani-inflammatory and overall immune supportive capabilities. It is native to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. It can now be found throughout much of the world South America, North America, Oceania, and Europe. In the some parts of the US, some people would considered it an invasive species as it grows prolifically which actually makes it great for medicine as we should never run out!
Reishi:
The primary purpose of this medicinal mushroom in this blend is for it strong immunomodulatory affects. Reishi has immune enhancing but often more importantly it has immune balancing/”modulating” affects that can make all the difference when fighting of an infection. In fact many studies have now shown that it is not direct viral damage that causes the flu to become “deadly” but rather what is known as “inflammatory cytokine storm” which is basically and over reactive immune response that ultimately causes excessive tissue destruction. Modulating the immune system through supporting the natural balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which Reishi has been shown to do, can make all the difference.
Supplemental Properties include but are not limited to:
Antiviral
Antibacterial
Antioxidant
Anti-inflammatory
Immune stimulant/modulator
